Chemical Dependency, a Devastating Disease

Chemical Dependency is a term used to describe the disease of Drug and Alcohol Addiction. The American Medical Association (AMA), The American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have determined alcoholism and drug addiction to be diseases. Those who suffer from chemical dependency have far reaching and often catastrophic consequences. Physical problems associated with this illness include liver problems, memory loss, heart disease, birth defects, cognitive deficits, accidents and death. Mental Health complications encompass depression, anxiety, insomnia, violence and suicide. The hallmark of chemical dependency is a decrease in the ability of the person to function as a responsible citizen. Thus, the loss of close personal relationships, legal issues, job loss, and health concerns become consequences. Often, the entire family suffers.

What is Recovery?

Recovery is the return to normal functioning of the biological, psychological and social being. To those who accept the principles of Twelve Step, Recovery also means "working the program," which includes attending Twelve Step meetings, becoming educated about Twelve Step principles, working the steps with an appropriate sponsor, and achieving fellowship with the recovery community. Recovery Truly Works.
